Rep. Mike Lawler Announces Reelection Bid
Rep. Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York, has declared his intention to run for reelection in 2026. His announcement came during a Wednesday interview with Fox News, emphasizing the importance of his battleground district.
Lawler had previously hinted at a possible challenge against Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, but his decision to run for his House seat may dampen Democratic aspirations to reclaim the district that shifted toward Republicans in 2022.
“There’s no doubt that Kathy Hochul is America’s worst governor. New York has the highest taxes and the worst business environment in the country. She needs to be defeated in 2026,” Lawler stated during the interview.
“I’m proud to run for reelection based on my record and aim to help maintain a Republican majority in the House,” he added.
His reelection campaign also serves as a relief for Republicans looking to hold their narrow majority in the House leading up to 2026. Interestingly, Lawler is one of just three House Republicans representing a district that went for Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election but where Lawler outperformed Trump by 6 points.
Lawler’s bid could potentially clear a path for fellow Republican Elise Stefanik to enter the gubernatorial race. While Stefanik hasn’t made any official announcements, reports from The Hill suggest she is preparing to launch her campaign.
Currently, the only declared GOP candidate for governor is Carl Hyde Jr., who serves as supervisor in a small town. Bruce Blakeman, the county executive of Nassau County, may also run.
In a statement from Lawler’s office shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation, he was described as one of Congress’s most bipartisan and effective lawmakers, reiterating his commitment to serving New York families and addressing key national issues.
