Sunny Hostin reacts strongly to Stephen Colbert's departure, claims 'Late Show' cancellation threatens our Constitution

Sunny Hostin’s Reaction to Colbert’s “Late Show” Cancellation

Sunny Hostin, co-host of “The View,” has expressed strong emotions regarding CBS’s cancellation of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Her response was quite dramatic, suggesting that this move might signify a troubling trend towards dismantling constitutional rights.

Colbert, 61, recently revealed that CBS made the decision to end his show in May 2026. He shared this information in a public announcement.

Hostin stated, “If comedians are being attacked, that means our constitution is being dismantled.”

According to a statement from Paramount Global, the parent company of CBS, this decision to retire the show is based solely on financial considerations and does not reflect the show’s performance or content. They emphasized that the late-night TV landscape is challenging.

An internal source mentioned to the New York Post that the cancellation is purely financial, not politically motivated.

Colbert earns around $20 million annually, and with a staff of about 200, the show’s financials are significant. Reports from the Wall Street Journal noted similar financial pressures driving the decision.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Paramount and CBS reached a settlement in a lawsuit involving Donald Trump regarding a 60 Minutes interview. They will allocate $16 million for his upcoming presidential library and associated expenses.

Before the cancellation was confirmed, Colbert made a comment during his show, expressing his dissatisfaction with the situation: “I’m offended. I don’t know if there’s anything to repair my trust in this company.”

However, the co-hosts of “The View” raised questions about whether the timing of the cancellation might suggest political reasons behind it rather than solely financial ones.

Hostin voiced concern, saying, “If it’s political, everyone needs to worry. This is about the dismantling of our democracy and our constitution. The First Amendment is crucial for freedom of speech and a free press. It’s essential to our democracy, and we all should be worried.”

As the outrage over Colbert’s cancellation grew, Hostin found a moment to commend progressive leaders like those in Massachusetts and Vermont.

She remarked, “We must protect the constitution and democracy. It’s about so much more than just cancelling a TV show!”
