Warren: Colbert 'may have been canceled in order to curry favor' with Trump

Warren Suggests Colbert’s Show Cancellation Linked to Political Favoring

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) expressed her thoughts in an opinion piece on Wednesday, proposing that comedian Stephen Colbert’s show might have faced cancellation by CBS to “Curry Favor” with President Trump.

CBS announced the show’s cancellation on Friday after Colbert, a vocal critic of Trump, had criticized the merger between CBS’ parent company Skydance and Paramount. This merger requires federal approval to proceed.

The network claimed that the cancellation was purely a financial decision, citing reports that “The Late Show” was operating at a loss. However, Colbert and several commentators have suggested that political motivations could be at play.

Warren emphasized the need for vigilance against Trump’s “march towards authoritarianism,” making a call for Democrats to prioritize fighting corruption. “We all have to demonstrate that we’re paying attention,” she wrote.

She further mentioned, “While it’s unfortunate that CBS canceled ‘Late Show with Stephen Colbert,’ it’s concerning that a leading late-night program may have been axed to gain favor with an aspiring king.”

Colbert had openly criticized both CBS and its parent company, Paramount Global, prior to the cancellation. This decision has drawn considerable backlash, with CBS justifying it on financial grounds.

Colbert accused the network of leaking financial data to the media, claiming that the show incurred losses exceeding $40 million annually. “That’s a substantial figure,” he remarked, adding, “We might have anticipated losing $24 million, but Paramount could have managed the remaining $16 million… or wait.”

Colbert referenced a recent settlement with Trump during a “60 Minutes” interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris. “Rather than contesting Trump’s ‘worthless’ lawsuit, Paramount settled and handed $16 million to Trump’s Presidential Library. It seems like a bribe right before our eyes,” he stated. In legal terms, such financial arrangements with government officials are often described as a “big and fat meal.”

Warren concluded by pointing out that just three days later, CBS, owned by Paramount, canceled Colbert’s show, with Trump quickly celebrating the development.

The Hill has reached out to Paramount, CBS, and the White House for comments.
