Escalation of Conflict on Thai-Cambodia Border

At least 12 individuals have lost their lives amid growing violence along the Thai-Cambodia border, leading Thailand to close its border with Cambodia as tensions rise.

Reports indicate that one of Thailand’s F-16 fighters engaged targets in Cambodia along the disputed border, destroying military installations. The Thai army confirmed this, stating that the jets dropped two bombs on a road. Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense condemned the action as a “reckless and brutal military attack” against its sovereignty.

In a diplomatic fallout, Thailand recalled its ambassador from Cambodia and announced the expulsion of its own ambassador in response to the escalating crisis. Cambodia, in turn, has downgraded its diplomatic relations with Thailand to the lowest level, withdrawing all its embassy staff from Bangkok. Cambodian officials have also requested that all diplomatic personnel in Thailand exit the country.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, mentioned he would be reaching out to the leaders of both nations for discussions. Given Malaysia’s role as the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), he is positioned to mediate between the two member countries.

As a precaution, the U.S. Embassies in both Bangkok and Phnom Penh have advised American citizens residing or traveling near the border to adhere to directions from local security forces. This follows an earlier warning about the potential dangers for U.S. citizens in the area, with the State Department labeling the location as “Risk Level 1,” indicating that while travel is permitted, caution is advised.

The underlying causes of this latest conflict remain unclear, but it appears to follow a series of confrontations that began in May, where both sides accused each other of initiating fire. In a previous exchange, one Cambodian soldier was reported killed, and tensions have only escalated since, leading to border crossings being halted by Thailand and a ban on Thai media in Cambodia.
