Budget Vacation Decisions

How much are you willing to spend for an affordable getaway?

Recently, British tourists opted for a one-star hotel in Miami, Florida, paying under $200 per night. Simon Wilson, who frequently shares his travel experiences online, posted an Instagram reel that has now garnered over 2 million views. Interestingly, he stayed at a place in the upscale South Beach area, where rooms typically go for over $500 a night.

Without prior reservations, Wilson popped into the hotel and asked the receptionist about a room with a single bed.

He noted that he had seen negative reviews online, and when he questioned the staff about the poor ratings, they could only shrug in response.

The one-bed room cost $149 plus taxes, totaling about $184.86. Additionally, there was a $50 deposit that would be refunded upon checkout.

Wilson ended up paying $234.86 right away upon checking into the one-star hotel.

This budget accommodation features a total of 80 rooms, but that night, only nine were occupied.

Inquiring about amenities, Wilson found out there were none—no swimming pool, sauna, or even breakfast service. Instead, he was just provided with a room.

As he opened the door to his ground-floor room, he expressed some uncertainty: “I don’t know what to expect here.”

Upon entering, he remarked, “This isn’t that bad.” He showcased the room, which included a small dining table with one chair, a bedside cabinet, and a TV remote.

Next, he checked the bathroom. The shower looked “pretty clean,” and he noted there was a sufficient amount of soap.

“The main thing and most important thing is the bed,” he stated. “What does this look like?”

After inspecting the pillow and sheets, he deemed them suitable for a good night’s sleep.

“I think there could have been a bargain in South Beach, Miami,” Wilson concluded.

However, viewers were quick to express their opinions in the comments.

“Our man was rinsing,” one wrote, including a laughing emoji.

Another commenter suggested that even half of that price would feel like a rip-off. “It’s very basic and it’s hell of an expensive room, especially without breakfast or even coffee!” they added.

Conversely, some viewers acknowledged the steep pricing likely stems from the location in South Beach.

“We complain about all the prices, but they’re just standard in Miami. If you’re in South Beach, that’s the price you pay,” someone pointed out.

Comments also noted that last-minute prices in Miami are often lower, and finding anything rated one, two, or three stars can be quite a challenge.

South Beach is indeed one of Miami’s most expensive areas.

According to some sources, premium oceanfront hotels can range from $400 to over $1,000 per night during peak season, although booking in advance can often secure better rates.

In the US, one-star hotels typically indicate basic room options with minimal amenities, focusing primarily on functionality and affordability.
