USDA Restructuring and Staff Cuts Announced
The USDA revealed a significant restructuring on Thursday, citing an oversize workforce and excessive spending that has increased during the Biden administration.
As part of the changes, the USDA is planning to reduce its workforce in the Washington, DC area by over 50% while relocating some staff to other parts of the country. Over the last four years, agency staff has grown by 8%, and salaries have risen by 14.5%, but this hasn’t led to any tangible benefits for key groups in the agricultural sector.
“American agriculture is essential for this country and the world, and we must support our dedicated farmers and producers,” Agriculture Secretary Brook Rollins mentioned, reflecting on the drive for change initiated by President Trump.
The primary goal of the restructuring is to better align the agency with the communities it serves. The USDA’s Washington headquarters will shrink from around 4,600 employees to about 2,000, with many positions relocating to regional offices across the nation.
Currently, over 15,000 employees have opted for voluntary leave or deferred retirement. While the emphasis is on voluntary reallocation of staff, the agency may introduce further cuts as needed to align with its financial capabilities and objectives.
This plan also aims to simplify management, cut down on bureaucracy, and consolidate duplicate roles across various USDA-affiliated offices in the DC region. Interestingly, despite the reduction in staff, the agency is still managing a facility with $1.3 billion in maintenance needs, which houses only 1,900 people even though it’s designed for 6,000.
Despite these changes, the USDA’s preparedness for wildfires remains undeterred. Rollins emphasized the commitment to a transparent process that maintains essential health and safety services that Americans rely on.
“We’re doing what’s right for the hardworking USDA employees who serve the American people,” Rollins added, underscoring the value of these employees to the nation’s agriculture.
