Authorities disclose reason behind the death of Greek soccer player discovered in pool

George Baldock Found Dead in Swimming Pool

Authorities have revealed the cause of death for George Baldock, a 31-year-old soccer player from the English Premier League, who was discovered dead in the swimming pool at his home in Greece in October. The Milton Keynes Coroners Court conducted an investigation hearing on Wednesday, confirming that Baldock died from drowning. Notably, postmortem tests showed no presence of drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of his death.

Reports from the investigation noted that Baldock had a significantly enlarged heart, which could make him prone to cardiac arrhythmia. This kind of irregular heartbeat can sometimes be harmless, but in other cases, it can lead to serious health problems.

Baldock’s passing has officially been labeled an accident. He was found in the swimming pool on October 9, and first responders were unable to revive him.

Born in the UK, Baldock played for Sheffield United for three seasons in the Premier League. He made a recent transfer to Panathinaikos, a club in Greece’s Super League, just three days before his death. He had also represented the Greek national team and participated in a match against Georgia during the Euro 2024 playoffs earlier in the year.

In a heartfelt statement, the Greek Football Federation expressed profound sorrow at Baldock’s loss, saying, “There is no word to describe the human pain caused by the news of the unjust loss of one of our youth. This moment calls for silence. I express my sadness to his family and his second family.”
