House Oversight Committee Subpoenas Ghislaine Maxwell
Rep. James Comer, the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has called for former associate Ghislaine Maxwell to provide a deposition. This follows Maxwell’s conviction related to Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking activities.
Her deposition is scheduled for August 11, 2025, at the Federal Correctional Facility in Tallahassee, as per a press release from the Oversight Committee. It’s interesting to note that reports have surfaced suggesting Maxwell seemed quite agreeable during her earlier interactions with Congress. Apparently, she wasn’t given a plea deal and was reportedly pleasant while addressing the committee.
Maxwell was convicted in December 2021 on three counts related to conspiracy, receiving a 20-year sentence for her role in the trafficking of minors and other criminal sexual activities.
Comer highlighted that the scrutiny surrounding both Maxwell and Epstein has garnered significant public interest. He noted that on February 11, 2025, the Committee sought a briefing concerning federal documents related to Epstein’s investigation and prosecution. In May, the task force initiated another request for briefings regarding the release of “the complete Epstein Files.”
Previously, Breitbart News reported claims from Maxwell’s family that she did not receive a fair trial. They may pursue a habeas corpus request, arguing against the legality of her imprisonment.
As mentioned by Fox News, her family expressed hope in taking further legal action to secure her release, indicating plans to submit a habeas corpus petition in the Southern District of New York to challenge her sentence.
They stated that this would permit her to contest her imprisonment based on new evidence, including potential government misconduct that could have impacted the trial’s outcome.
The recent subpoena follows a motion initiated by Rep. Tim Burchett, directing the Oversight Committee to compel Maxwell’s testimony.
Additionally, there were other motions discussed during a recent subcommittee hearing, which included figures like former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State, and former Attorney General Eric Holder, among others.
As previously reported, despite interest from former President Donald Trump in obtaining testimonies related to the Epstein case, a federal judge in Florida denied his administration’s request for access to sealed transcripts from the case.
