Republican Speaker Michael Whatley Prepares for Senate Run in North Carolina
Republican Speaker Michael Whatley, who played a significant role in the party’s efforts during the 2024 election, appears to be gearing up for a Senate bid in North Carolina.
This news comes amid speculation surrounding former RNC co-chair Lala Trump, who recently announced she wouldn’t seek a Senate seat.
“After much consideration and heartfelt discussions with my family, friends, and supporters, I have chosen not to pursue a US Senate seat in North Carolina at this time,” Trump mentioned after stepping down from her position at the RNC. She expressed her gratitude for the support she received from her hometown.
The developments are reportedly happening under former President Donald Trump’s approval.
Sources close to Whatley suggest that the president sees him as a strong contender against former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, who is likely to declare his candidacy to succeed retired Senator Thom Tillis.
A reliable source also indicated to Breitbart News that Whatley’s Senate run has Trump’s endorsement.
An official announcement is anticipated within the next ten days, with Trump expected to reveal Whatley’s successor during his Senate announcement.
Additionally, Whatley has reportedly met with Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), chair of the National Republican Senate Committee (NRSC). There have been discussions since January about potential candidates to replace Tillis.
Recent polling suggests that Republicans might benefit from backing “pro-Trump” candidates in this race.
There is a belief that former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper will soon launch his campaign, and Trump has acknowledged that North Carolina’s GOP seats will pose a significant challenge for Republicans.
