Francona mentions that 'white' people are 'perfectly okay' with 'Indians'

Recently, Terry Francona, the former manager of the Cleveland Indians, shared some provocative thoughts regarding President Trump’s supporters and his previous team.

Though currently managing the Cincinnati Reds, Francona helmed the Indians from 2013 to 2023.

The team’s name was changed after more than a century following a discussion with Native American representatives, during which owner Paul Dolan concluded they were “doing the right thing.”

Francona commented on the name change during a pre-game interview before a matchup against the Washington Nationals.

“And if you’re white (you’re probably fine),” he stated.

He reflected on his belief that, perhaps, white individuals may be more comfortable with Native-themed names compared to others.

Francona noted, “I wasn’t responsible for the courage it took to make those changes. That was Paul Dolan’s decision. I admired him for it, especially since it wasn’t the popular choice among older fans.”

He further mentioned, “There are plenty of people in this country who might not want to go back to what things once were.”

Interestingly, a recent report indicated that many fans actually wish to see the Indians’ name reinstated. One survey showed a split where 47% of baseball fans prefer the “Indians” name, while only 12% favor “Guardians.”

One fan expressed, “It’s not about racism or anything, it’s just about honoring a good old tribe.”

In a related note, Trump has called on both the Cleveland Guardians and the Washington Commanders to revert to their previous names, claiming that societal views have shifted since their name changes a few years ago.

Chris Antonetti, a top executive in the baseball organization, mentioned he hasn’t really considered reverting to the old name.

“It’s clear not everyone is happy with the change,” Francona remarked, but added, “as long as you respect the conversations around this, it’s okay to express your feelings.”

Baseball analyst Gary Sheffield Jr. joined the debate about the names, affirming that while Francona’s perspective is valid, one could argue similarly when the team was still called the Indians.
