Concerns Over Trump’s Accusations Against Obama
Former CNN host Jim Acosta voiced his worries on Thursday regarding Donald Trump’s recent accusations against Barack Obama. During a press conference in the Oval Office, the president claimed that Obama was “guilty” of “treason.” Acosta mentioned on Charlie Sykes’ podcast that such accusations are “very dangerous” and could potentially provoke violence against Obama.
Acosta stated, “It’s extremely dangerous for Donald Trump to accuse Barack Obama of treason.” He emphasized that Trump knows the kind of impact his words can have, especially among his more extreme supporters, which could even put Obama’s life at risk.
Acosta elaborated on the troubling nature of Trump’s rhetoric, saying, “He is at war with the truth, weaponizing lies about the election and about Barack Obama. These are his weapons of mass destruction. It’s disturbing how he bombards the truth of this country.” While expressing concern for Obama’s safety, Acosta had previously seemed less alarmed about Trump’s rhetoric in a media press club interview back in April.
Reflecting on the events of January 6th, Acosta remarked that there’s no real argument against the threat Trump poses to American democracy, as he appears to be leading extremist movements.
Interestingly, just three months after Acosta’s interview, there were reports of two assassination attempts on Trump during his campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The suspect in one of the incidents, Ryan Wesley Routh, had a history of donating to Democrats while residing in Hawaii. Posts from Routh echoed concerns similar to Acosta’s about democracy being at stake.
One of Routh’s public statements tagged former President Joe Biden, urging him to embrace democracy and freedom in America.
Trump’s allegations of “treason” against Obama have received attention alongside a declassified document from former Director of National Intelligence, Tarsi Gabbard, which claims there is overwhelming evidence suggesting Obama and his national security team politicized intelligence following Trump’s 2016 election victory.
