Trump issues an order to protect college sports

Trump Signs Executive Order on University Athlete Payments

On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that introduces new regulations concerning payments for university athletes. This order specifically bans athletes from receiving money from third-party sources.

Interestingly, while this order lays out certain restrictions, it doesn’t limit the payments from outside parties related to Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals for these athletes.

In the aftermath of a recent settlement involving universities and the NCAA, colleges are now allowed to compensate athletes. With universities vying for top talent in football and men’s basketball, there’s a growing concern about the resources that remain for women’s sports and lesser-funded men’s programs.

Under the directive, universities must clarify how they plan to preserve resources for these non-revenue sports. The executive order emphasizes that revenue sharing between universities and their athletes must be done in a way that protects opportunities for women and lesser-known sports.

It states, “This order requires preservation and, where possible, expansion of opportunities for scholarships and athletic competition in university sports.”

The order also tasks the U.S. Attorney General, the Secretary of Labor, and several advisors to ensure the rights of student-athletes are upheld. However, it seems that there was a lack of clear guidelines in the initial rollout regarding how sports are categorized.

As conversations evolve around this topic, some questions linger. How will these changes impact the landscape of college athletics? And will the efforts to maintain balance truly yield the intended outcomes?
