Assault Charges Against Senegalese National in US

A man from Senegal has been charged with assaulting US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and fellow detainees using potentially lethal weapons.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) made this announcement regarding Bass Ndiaye in a statement issued on Thursday.

Ndiaye was arrested on July 17 and taken to a federal immigration facility in New York City. While waiting there, he allegedly attempted to use a pair of scissors to attack an ICE officer and around twelve other detainees. Fortunately, he was disarmed and restrained by ICE officials before anyone could be seriously harmed.

Interestingly, the DHS indicated that Ndiaye was released into the US under the Biden administration’s catch-and-release policy. Although he was arrested at the southern border in October 2023, he was let go within the country.

Currently, he faces one charge of assaulting federal officers with deadly or dangerous weapons. This information was confirmed by US attorneys from the Southern District of New York.

Notably, attacks on ICE officials have surged dramatically—over 800%—compared to the previous year, as reported by DHS.

DHS Deputy Director Tricia McLaughlin emphasized that Ndiaye would face justice for his violent actions, which comes amidst a backdrop of increasing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement. She criticized the narratives propelled by some Democrats and the media that she believes foster hostility against ICE officials, claiming that false information contributes to violence against them.

McLaughlin articulated support for law enforcement, stating that these brave individuals risk their lives to protect American citizens. She underscored the gravity of the situation, pointing out that threats against officers are not merely abstract; they’re very real, with some agents even facing physical assaults.

The discussion around immigration enforcement remains contentious, and it’s evident that the agency is caught in the crossfire—navigating between public perception and their mandate to uphold the law.
