James Cook Stands Firm in Contract Negotiations with Bills

James Cook may be attending the Buffalo Bills Training Camp this week, but he’s not backing down in his contract negotiations with the team. Cook, who was the NFL leader in rushing touchdowns last season, made his feelings clear after participating in the first couple of days of camp.

“We’re having a discussion,” he shared. “I mean, I deserve and need what I want, and it will happen in the end.”

When pressed by reporters on whether he was confident the Bills would agree to his request for a contract extension, he replied, “But it’s going to happen; it’s going to be accomplished. Wherever it happens.” At just 25, his confidence is apparent. This offseason, he made waves on social media, playfully stating “15 Mill a year.”

Cook is in a competitive position, vying for one of the top average annual salaries among NFL running backs, alongside veteran Derrick Henry of the Baltimore Ravens. Although Cook has publicly expressed his feelings about his contract issue, he has no regrets about making those sentiments known.

Buffalo’s General Manager, Brandon Bean, addressed Cook’s situation during the camp, saying, “Sometimes, I can’t get on the same page, or sometimes I’m trying to install it. There have been people we really wanted to keep here. We couldn’t make it work. But I can tell you that James Cook is practicing this year at training camp, and he’s still representing red, white, and blue.”

Cook has yet to finish his rookie contract, which the Bills selected him during the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. If they can’t come to an agreement for an extension, he will hit free agency next season unless the team opts to franchise tag him.

Unusually for an NFL player in negotiations, Cook has been actively involved in the Bills’ mandatory offseason practices. “That’s my job,” he said, emphasizing his dedication. “I’m here to participate, so don’t get fined and come out here showcasing I’m ready to go.”

He calls the Bills a “great organization” and expresses a desire to continue his career with them. However, he’s also quite clear about his stance—he’s not planning to leave any money on the table. Last season, Cook rushed for 1,009 yards along with 16 touchdowns, totaling 1,122 yards during the 2023 campaign.

As the Bills gear up for the upcoming season, Cook remains a crucial piece of their offense, despite sharing snaps with others like Ray Davis and Ty Johnson. Last season, he played around 48% of the offensive snaps in 16 games, contributing significantly to the team’s success.
