Montana Woman’s Tax Troubles Reveal Marital Issues
A woman from Montana shared her experience on the “Ramsey Show,” expressing her shock and frustration after discovering her husband hadn’t paid their tax bill of $82,000. As a nurse, she had maintained a steady career, even while pursuing real estate full-time. In 2021, they earned a substantial income, which she assumed her husband was managing responsibly, but that trust was misplaced.
Instead of settling their tax obligation, her husband spent the money on a failed business venture. He avoided contact with their certified public accountant and kept the IRS notification a secret from her. As a result, the couple’s CPA had to file their taxes without her husband’s consent early this year to evade further penalties.
She found out about the situation when she received a certified letter. Now, the IRS plans to seize their home to cover their $150,000 debt. Reflecting on her feelings, she mentioned, “I feel blind and betrayed.” Though considering divorce, she’s also contemplating taking out a second mortgage or selling their home to manage the chaos.
Dave Ramsey provided some straightforward advice. He noted that the tax responsibility seems to stem directly from her husband’s business income. If she separates from him, she might be eligible to file under the IRS’s innocent spouse provisions.
Ramsey emphasized the importance of consulting a tax lawyer or a skilled CPA. He mentioned that if the house is sold, the IRS can only claim their due from her husband’s share. However, if she remains in the relationship, the dynamics change significantly. “They would need to rebuild trust amidst the betrayal and lies,” he remarked.
He drew a connection between her situation and broader themes of wealth and character, referencing insights from Tom Stanley, author of “The Millionaire Next Door.” Stanley had noted that billionaires possess an exceptional level of integrity.
Ramsey concluded by saying that integrity is a choice, and it may be too late for her husband to change. “He has that decision to make now, but if he doesn’t, well, she has issues to contend with,” he warned.
