Alijah Vera-Tucker seeks the Jets' accountability and the future it brings.

Aliya Vera Tucker noticed that Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner secured a combined extension of $250.4 million, solidifying their role as key players for the Jets in this new era.

On Thursday, coach Aaron Glenn referred to Vera Tucker in a manner that emphasized the gravity of his situation. With the fifth-year option, the upcoming 2025 season has turned into an important contract year, and he hopes to initiate discussions about a new deal soon.

While Vera Tucker aims to make the most of training camp, letting his agents handle his future, he shares the optimism along with Wilson and Gardner. They all believe the Jets can turn around their previous disappointing seasons.

“It’s a great feeling to be with the team that drafted you,” Vera Tucker expressed. “I think everyone feels that way. In my opinion, Glenn really emphasizes physicality, which is crucial, but there’s also an element of accountability that I find important in a head coach.”

However, some factors still need to align for Vera-Tucker’s long-term deal to happen. His 2022 and 2023 seasons were marred by season-ending injuries, specifically torn triceps and Achilles, which affected previous first-round picks.

Interestingly, he mentioned the classic line often heard during training camp about feeling his best after the offseason, but in his case, it may actually hold some truth.

According to Pro Football Focus, Vera Tucker finished the 2024 season as one of six guards with run-blocking and pass-blocking grades exceeding 74.0 while logging all 916 snaps at right guard, switching from his prior position.

This season, the Jets’ offensive line appears even more solidified.

They plan to invest in further first-round picks to secure tackles Olumuyiwa Fashanu (2024) and Armando Membou (2025). This trio is expected to help protect quarterback Justin Fields, who walked away from practice on Thursday with a toe injury.

“We want to carry the responsibility,” Vera Tucker said. “Our goal is to run the ball effectively. Like any offensive line, we aspire to dominate in the trenches. If we assemble an O-line like this, we need to leverage that opportunity. Not many teams invest in their O-line the way we do.”

In the majority of Vera-Tucker’s career, the Jets’ offensive lines have struggled, but with him as an anchor, this could be an opportunity for an empowered unit.

If Glenn and Vera Tucker get their way, he could be a significant part of Gang Green’s future.

“He’s one of those guards who can impact both the run and pass games,” Glenn noted. “He’s a strong individual who understands how we want to execute our offensive strategy.”
