The US Fertility Rate Hits New Low in 2024
The fertility rate in the United States has reached a record low in 2024, which has also delayed marriage trends. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the birth rate has decreased to 1.6 children per woman. However, there was a slight increase of 1% in total births from 2023 to 2024, amounting to 3,628,934 births.
The article highlights a societal shift, noting, “The country’s birth rate has been declining for decades, because we are waiting to get married and have children until the second half of our lives.”
Recent findings also show that women over 40 are becoming new mothers, as reported by NBC News in March.
A report from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) noted that the US fertility rate has been on a downward trend through 2023. American women now have an average of 1.62 children, a decrease from 1.66 in 2021 and 2022.
Researchers point out various reasons for this increase in the average age of first-time mothers, including changing social expectations, advancements in technology, dating habits, financial challenges of raising children, and a rise in university enrollments among women.
In light of these trends, former President Donald Trump’s administration explored strategies to boost fertility rates nationwide. One suggestion was a $5,000 baby bonus, as reported by Breitbart News in April.
Another idea involved reserving 30% of Fulbright Program scholarships for married individuals or those with children. The administration also considered developing educational initiatives to inform women about their reproductive cycles, helping them understand ovulation and optimal pregnancy timing.
According to Breitbart News, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has reported a global fertility crisis, with many implemented policies proving ineffective.
Furthermore, large-scale immigration under President Joe Biden has contributed significantly to population growth in the United States, as revealed by the Census Bureau. Without this influx of immigrants, the population growth would likely stabilize.
