Controversy Surrounds Dan Rourke’s Comments on George Springer
Dan Rourke, a media producer with John Boy Media, faced significant backlash after a troubling rant directed at Blue Jays outfielder George Springer during a live stream on Wednesday. Major League Baseball (MLB) might be taking notice.
On his “Yankees Avenue” stream, Rourke said, “F-K You Springer, kill yourself,” after Springer contributed to a 4-2 lead that helped the Yankees secure an 8-4 win over Toronto. The clip quickly went viral on X and Reddit, provoking strong reactions from fans, especially given Rourke’s affiliation with Jomboy Media, which has become an influential part of MLB’s media landscape in recent years.
One Blue Jays fan account on X commented, “I can’t stress how pathetic you are, as you are @danalanrouke. This guy is hired by John Boy and tells the player to kill him. F–K you.”
On Thursday night, Jimmy O’Brien, the founder of John Boy Media, addressed the situation. He explained, “Dan Rourke is doing his livestream for Yanks Avenue…and said a few things you can’t say. I spoke with Dan today. Everyone in the office was talking, and he came to us… and he felt bad and I think he’d apologize.”
It’s important to note that while Yankees Avenue is Rourke’s personal project, he is still employed by John Boy Media and is a well-known member of the team.
O’Brien mentioned that Rourke’s background in a gaming culture—often dominated by younger audiences—doesn’t excuse his comments, stating, “It’s awful, and it could have an impact from that.” He added that the league might take action, saying, “The league might call us and say, ‘Hey, he’s not allowed here.'” However, nothing has been decided as of now.
Reflecting on language and public persona, O’Brien noted that he had to adjust his vocabulary as he gained prominence within Jomboy Media. “People my age used a lot of words with great freedom in the early 2000s, but I can’t say anything anymore.” He emphasized that while Rourke likely didn’t intend malice, it doesn’t excuse the hurtful nature of the remarks.
