Trump Mentions He’s Considering Sending Rebate Checks to Americans Funded by Tariffs

Trump Considers Tariff Revenue for American Rebates

On Friday, President Donald Trump mentioned the possibility of using funds from tariffs to issue rebate checks to Americans. This comes after the U.S. government recorded a $27 billion budget surplus in June, partly due to high tariff revenues.

When asked by reporters at the White House about the likelihood of rebates for Americans, Trump indicated that while his administration is focused on paying down debt, some rebates might be feasible. He stated, “We’re actually thinking about it. There’s a lot of money coming in,” highlighting the potential for some individuals at specific income levels to receive a small rebate.

Back on April 2, Trump announced “liberation day” tariffs affecting many countries, though he later reduced these to a baseline rate of 10% after a 90-day suspension. Following this period, he updated numerous countries about the adjusted tariff rates through letters.

At a Cabinet meeting on July 8, Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent forecasted that tariff revenues could reach as high as $300 billion by the end of 2025. Trump has consistently defended tariffs as a means of realigning trade practices and generating revenue.

Additionally, Trump revealed a new trade agreement between Japan and the Philippines, implying it could be one of the largest deals to date. He asserted that Japan would implement a 15% mutual tariff on U.S. goods, which he described as significant.
