Massachusetts Attorney General Used Almost $300,000 of Taxpayer Funds for Travel

Massachusetts Attorney General’s Travel Expenses Under Scrutiny

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell has reportedly utilized taxpayer funds for extensive travel during the last fiscal year.

Documents indicate that Campbell spent nearly $300,000 using taxpayer-funded credit cards, including trips to France and the Caribbean, as highlighted in an analysis by The Boston Herald.

Campbell’s travels included a visit to France in July, where she engaged in meetings with officials from across the country. Records show she charged approximately $13,627 on state procurement cards for this trip.

Her most significant expenses between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, were attributed to flights, transportation, and hotel accommodations. In total, her office spent $288,146.26 on procurement cards during this time.

According to her office, the travels to Paris and Normandy were organized by the National Association of Attorneys General and included participation in events commemorating those who sacrificed their lives during World War II. However, some AGs noted that the event had ties to businesses that funded the trip, which took place a few months after the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Recently, Campbell led fellow Democrats in a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump’s administration to challenge cuts to federal funding for climate change initiatives.

In May, she introduced a guide aimed at educating residents about their rights amid increased actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) related to illegal immigration, which has surged during the Biden administration.

Additionally, in October 2023, Campbell announced the formation of a “reproductive justice” unit following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. This initiative aims to position Massachusetts as a leader in expanding access to abortion and “gender-affirming care,” while also addressing misinformation that hampers healthcare access.

Campbell is not the only public official facing scrutiny for taxpayer spending. Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser also faced backlash for using public funds during a golf tournament in Georgia. In 2022, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell admitted to spending city money on upscale flight upgrades and pledged to reimburse it.

Moreover, Dalton, Illinois Mayor Tiffany Enyard encountered criticism over similar spending habits earlier this year.

According to recent reports from the Herald, a significant majority of voters expressed concern over a lack of audits for Congress, pointing out that Campbell’s office had received a 12% budget increase to persist in challenging the Trump administration.
