Jessica Simpson Finds Her Voice Again

Jessica Simpson is rediscovering herself beyond the Hollywood spotlight. After a lengthy 15-year hiatus from music, she’s opening up about how moving away from Los Angeles has helped her reconnect with her true self. It turns out, Nashville is where she feels most at home.

Reflecting on her journey, Simpson, now 45, explained that the pressures of Los Angeles were stifling. “I think it’s difficult to do that in Los Angeles, because I run a brand,” she said. “But when I leave and go inside myself, I discover that I have to find that purpose and share it.” This creative space allowed her to explore new musical endeavors after focusing on being a mom and managing her fashion lines.

In Nashville, Simpson found a nurturing songwriting community, which rekindled her creative drive. “Songwriters— they’re not competitive,” she stated, emphasizing the supportive atmosphere that fosters authenticity. For Simpson, that’s crucial, especially considering her long absence from live performances since around 2006, a time when she was dealing with personal hardships like divorce.

“I really find that place in Nashville. …It’s hard to do that in LA… But when I leave and go inside me, I find that purpose.”

Simpson’s experience as a former pop star was often overshadowed by competition, an aspect that she has now moved past. “Growing up as a pop star, it was always about pop girls,” she reflected, acknowledging how those pressures shaped her perspective.

Now, almost two decades later, she’s venturing back into music on her own terms. She also expressed how creating music acts as a therapeutic outlet, especially after her recent split from NFL player Eric Johnson, with whom she has three children. “Creating new music can help heal my mind,” she shared.

The emotional journey she’s been on has led her to seek clarity. With her new work, she aims to impart resilience to her kids, teaching them life’s challenges can be overcome. “I want my daughter and son to know about it,” she stated. “No matter what we go through in life, we cannot defeat us.” She emphasizes the importance of knowing who you are and aiming for your goals.

Following the separation, Simpson announced that she and Johnson are focusing on co-parenting, appreciating the privacy and support they’ve received during this time. Now, she’s open to dating again, although she admits to some apprehension about putting herself out there. “I’m a little scared,” she confessed, recognizing the uniqueness of her type.

As she embarks on this next chapter, Simpson celebrated the 20th anniversary of her fashion label, the Jessica Simpson Collection. “I turned 45 on July 10th,” she recalled her mother saying, “Well, honey, I was 45 when we started the brand.” This reflection on age reassures Simpson that it’s never too late to start anew. “There is no age limit for starting again,” she concluded, embodying a spirit of resilience and hope as she navigates her future.
