Arizona Woman Sentenced for Conspiracy with North Korea

An Arizona woman has received a 102-month prison sentence for collaborating with North Korean groups to infiltrate U.S. businesses.

U.S. lawyer Janine Ferris Piro labeled her actions as “Code Red,” indicating that American companies unknowingly contribute to a technological conflict with North Korea.

Christina Chapman, aged 50, was found to be acting on behalf of North Korea’s munitions development division. She utilized a complex scheme of stolen identities, creating a troubling scenario for American interests.

‘This is a serious situation. Your tech sector is being compromised by North Korea,’ Piro stated.

Chapman’s home was equipped with nearly 100 laptops that facilitated North Korean agents accessing their systems under the guise of working for U.S. companies.

By exploiting the identities of 68 Americans, she helped North Korea secure 309 remote job positions, including some with Fortune 500 companies.

Essentially, North Korean operatives accessed Chapman’s home computers, fraudulently representing themselves to companies in a way that made it appear those activities were originating from Arizona.

Numerous foreign agents listed Chapman’s residence as their own, directing their salaries to her address. This arrangement funneled substantial funds to the North Korean government.

Chapman’s actions are projected to have generated around $17 million for the North Korean Ammunition Dispensary. In addition to her prison time, she faces a fine of $176,850, surpassing the $284,000 sent to North Korea.

Piro highlighted the scale of North Korea’s IT operations, stating, “The North Korean Munitions Bureau trains and employs over 3,000 individuals with IT skills, allowing U.S. companies to unwittingly engage in fraudulent practices benefiting the regime.” She delivered this message during a news conference.

Addressing corporate America, Piro asserted, “This is Code Red. Your tech sector is being compromised by North Korea. When large companies fail to exercise due diligence, they endanger national security.”

The Department of Justice documented that over 90 laptops were confiscated from Chapman in October 2023. It was also revealed that she sent 49 laptops and additional devices sourced from U.S. companies to various international destinations, including cities near China that border North Korea.

According to recent reports, North Korea’s tech network is believed to generate between $250 million and $600 million annually.
