Colorado Dentist’s Lover Testifies in Murder Trial
In a dramatic turn during the ongoing trial of Dr. James Toliver Craig, his lover, Dr. Karin Kane, took the stand on Tuesday, revealing intimate details about their relationship. The case revolves around allegations that Craig systematically killed his wife, Angela, through addiction to protein shakes contaminated with cyanide and tetrahydrozoline.
Kane, a 47-year-old orthodontist from Texas, met Craig at a dental conference in Las Vegas back in February 2023. At that time, she had recently finalized her divorce after 27 years of marriage and was navigating life as a single mother of two adult children.
“This was the first guy I had a one-on-one conversation with in 30 years,” she shared with the jury.
A Friend’s Insight into the Case
The conversation occurred while they were waiting for a dinner shuttle, where Kane recalled how honest and vulnerable Craig seemed. He spoke openly about his own divorce and his children, which she found comforting, even though he hadn’t actually divorced yet when they met.
They enjoyed two dinners together during the conference, and while their relationship grew closer, Kane emphasized that they did not engage in sexual activity. “We made it,” she said, though she ultimately pulled back, feeling it was moving too fast.
“I told him I wouldn’t sleep with anyone unless he was my ‘eternal man’,” she noted, to which Craig acknowledged her boundaries as “rational.”
Despite stepping back, their connection intensified through texts and phone calls, leading to over 4,000 messages exchanged in just 18 days. Kane admitted he expressed love for her just three days into their budding relationship, often with spiritual reflections.
“He said, ‘I fell in love with you so deeply that the list of attributes has become endless’,” she recounted.
While admitting that some of their messages transitioned into sexting, she recalled, “He said, ‘I know I’m fine without you, but I don’t want to be.'” Kane acknowledged the text exchanges included adult themes.
Craig’s Allegations and Personal Struggles
In late February, Craig wrote romantically to Kane, referring to her as “my eternal love.” Kane later expressed her concern about his relationship with his wife, hinting at the emotional turmoil and confusion surrounding Craig’s marital situation. On February 28, Craig indicated Angela was upset following an incident at a restaurant.
As the trial unfolded, Kane reflected on her initial feelings, admitting she didn’t perceive warning signs early in their communication. “No,” she replied when asked if she saw red flags, recognizing her naivety.
Though excited about their relationship, she kept it hidden from her children. Craig, meanwhile, regularly sent her poetic love notes and confided about his past mistakes.
Unfolding Events and Arrest
Kane was set to visit Craig in March but postponed her plans when Angela fell ill. On March 15, Craig texted Kane about a bleak update regarding his wife’s health, noting her lack of brain activity due to an emergency incident. Kane expressed her love for him in reply, navigating the emotional weight of the situation.
Craig’s arrest came shortly after, in a shocking twist, while Kane was present. “I told them, ‘They’re divorced,'” she testified, during the chaos of the police confrontation.
Afterward, Cain recounted receiving love letters from Craig while he was incarcerated, yet she burned some out of distress before eventually handing others to authorities. Her last response to him was a firm, “Don’t write me anymore.”
This trial has illuminated not just the tragic loss of life but the tangled web of relationships and emotional conflicts entwined in Craig’s alleged actions. As the proceedings continue, questions linger about the depth of deception and the extent of Craig’s manipulation.
