Analyst talks about the choice to pray on air for Damar Hamlin

Dan Orlovsky’s Prayer for Damar Hamlin on Live TV

It’s been over two and a half years since Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest during a football game. Social media was filled with “thoughts and prayers,” but former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky wanted to take it a step further.

The day after the incident, he made the bold choice to pray live on television. He recounts hearing the Buffalo Bills organization emphasize their belief in prayer, which resonated with him deeply, even if it felt a bit out of place.

“God, we come to you in these moments we don’t understand,” he said during the broadcast. Orlovsky expressed feelings of anger and confusion, reaching out through prayer for Hamlin.

Orlovsky explained on the “Awful Announcement” podcast that, initially, it was a tough decision for him. He felt uncomfortable but realized that perhaps someone should genuinely pray for Hamlin instead of just offering words of “thoughts and prayers.” He mentions feeling a strong pull to say something meaningful.

After some back-and-forth, he decided to go ahead with the televised prayer. The overwhelming response he received was positive, with the majority of viewers connecting with the sentiment. He admitted to getting a few emails and texts from people who weren’t supportive, but they were in the minority.

He reflected on how he received a lot of love from his colleagues, stating there was no backlash or negativity directed at him from them. The experience seemed to resonate with many, indicating a deeper connection beyond just words.

Meanwhile, Damar Hamlin spent about a week in the hospital after the incident, but has since made a remarkable recovery and continues to be a valuable player for the Buffalo Bills’ defense.
