Mistaken Release of Violent Offender from Orleans Parish Jail

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office has reported that clerical errors led to the unintended release of violent offenders from Orleans Parish Jail. One such inmate, Halil Bryan, was released from a hospital on Friday, despite facing various charges. An internal investigation is currently underway to address this issue.

In a statement, Sheriff Susan Hutson acknowledged the mistake and took responsibility. She expressed sincere apologies to the public, law enforcement partners, and the judicial system, explaining that this incident stemmed from a misidentification due to two inmates sharing a surname.

Sheriff Hutson clarified, “The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office is fully responsible for the administrative errors that resulted in the incorrect release of Khalil Bryan.” The sheriff underscored the significance of communicating with victims affected by this situation and emphasized implementing safeguards to prevent future occurrences.

Bryan faced a range of serious allegations, including illegal possession of stolen property, domestic abuse, and firearms-related charges. He also had outstanding warrants from nearby Jefferson Parish, totaling over $125,000 in bonds due to various offenses.

Following the false release, Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams condemned the incident. He commented, “This is a troubling case highlighting ongoing systemic issues related to the custody and processing of inmates.” He added that the failure to verify Bryan’s identity prior to his release represents a dangerous lapse in protocol that jeopardizes public safety.

The District Attorney’s Office is actively working to reach out to victims and witnesses connected to Bryan’s case, ensuring that they receive necessary assistance. Sheriff Hutson mentioned that all known victims have been contacted, and efforts continue to reach those who haven’t been informed yet.

This incident comes on the heels of another troubling event when ten inmates escaped from the Orleans Parish Prison earlier in May. Most of those escapees have since been recaptured, but one individual remains at large.

Authorities are currently asking the public for assistance. They urge anyone with information regarding Halil Bryan’s whereabouts to reach out to law enforcement. The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office have yet to respond to requests for further comments.
