Sabrina Ionescu becomes part of exclusive WNBA group with her nearly game-winning performance for the Liberty

Sabrina Ionescu Shines in Liberty’s Crucial Performance

Sabrina Ionescu delivered a standout display just when the Liberty needed it most.

In a vibrant atmosphere at Barclays Center, fans donned neon colors while the team handed out construction-themed shirts to celebrate Ionescu’s achievement of scoring 30 points, along with eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals. This was particularly crucial as the Liberty were missing Breanna Stewart, who had sustained an injury during Saturday’s narrow 101-99 loss.

With this performance, Ionescu made her mark as the fourth player in WNBA history to reach this milestone.

“It’s all about adapting my game when the defense shifts towards me,” Ionescu mentioned. “We’ll keep refining our strategy to maximize offense. With one of our main scorers out, we needed to find easier shots. Whether it was mid-range or driving to the basket, we aimed to capitalize on free throw opportunities.”

Ionescu had an explosive first half, scoring 17 points, but the Sparks tightened their defense against her in the later quarters.

But Ionescu rose to the occasion, tying the game with just over two minutes left before she exited. She then contributed a critical jumper in the closing moments, maintaining her momentum from a strong 29-point outing against the Mercury just days earlier.

In the absence of Stewart, Ionescu and Natasha Cloud, who added 22 points, stepped up significantly.

Yet, despite her stellar performance, Ionescu couldn’t seal the win for the Liberty. She averaged a career-high 18.9 points per game and is heading to her fourth consecutive All-Star Game.

Kennedy Burke only played a brief six minutes before exiting due to convulsions, as confirmed by Coach Sandy Brondello. Leonie Fevich, who managed to score 10 points, showed signs of injury after Friday’s game.

Meanwhile, Jonquel Jones moved to seventh place on the Liberty’s all-time blocks list, surpassing Janel McCarville with a total of 114.

Stephanie Talbot, recently signed by the Liberty after being let go by the Valkyries, logged 17 minutes but struggled, going 0-2 from the field and grabbing four rebounds. Coach Brondello noted, “It’s tough for her; she hasn’t had much time to practice.”
