Reasons for LeBron James and the Lakers to part ways after eight years

The relationship spanned eight years.

It had its share of love, a championship win, and unforgettable celebrations filled with champagne. You could say there were moments likely scripted by Hollywood, creating a kind of fairytale around basketball.

But now?

It almost feels like a scene from “Marriage Story,” where exhausted individuals attempt to salvage something that might already be past its prime.

Perhaps it’s time for the Lakers and LeBron James to part ways.

This isn’t about hatred or a complete breakdown of the relationship. Sometimes, though, partnerships simply outlast their usefulness as both sides cling to the fear of what lies ahead.

LeBron hinted at this uncertainty after the Lakers faced a defeat at the hands of the Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals.

“I don’t know what the future holds,” he admitted, capturing an unsettling truth.

On the other hand, the Lakers seem to have clarity about their direction.

It likely involves Luka Doncic.

Doncic, at 27, is clearly in his prime. Meanwhile, LeBron, now 41, appears to be nearing the end of one of the most illustrious careers in NBA history. Their timelines just don’t align anymore. One is beginning a new chapter, while the other is winding down.

The Lakers had opportunities to center their plans around Doncic last year, but LeBron’s hefty contract—about $53 million for the last year—limited flexibility in building a team.

By the 2025-26 season, it felt like the Lakers had emotionally moved on while still trying to navigate their past relationship.

True, LeBron helped the team pull off a surprising first-round victory against the Rockets after Doncic was sidelined with an injury. Yet, the end result was still a sweep.

Both sides might find reasons to stick together.

When LeBron took a back seat as the third option, the team thrived, going 16-2. That’s likely to be a talking point for staying united and trying to “make it work.”

LeBron’s family ties to Los Angeles play a part too. His son, Bronny, still with the Lakers, and his other son, Bryce, playing in college just a flight away, keep him rooted there. His daughter Juri plays volleyball locally, and his wife, Savannah, is involved with the community. All these connections form a strong base.

But, of course, a divorce isn’t about reminiscing on good times.

It’s about facing the facts.

The Lakers have spent years building around LeBron’s preferences, adjusting rosters to suit him while trying to accommodate his moods and decisions. Sometimes it worked—like the Anthony Davis trade leading to the 2020 championship—but other times, like the Russell Westbrook acquisition, the outcome was disastrous.

That’s the hidden cost of having LeBron.

He’s not just a player; he’s an entire system.

The Lakers were intertwined with him for eight years.

Now, though, it might be best to shift focus to Doncic.

With over $100 million in salary cap space clearing up this summer, it’s a pivotal moment for the Lakers to start anew.

They need to find the right athletic support for Doncic—maybe a rim protector and some strong shooters to create balance on the court.

Lakers GM Rob Pelinka noted, “Every team, including us, wants to have LeBron James on the roster.” It was a courteous statement, but such comments often precede difficult conversations.

Unofficially, it may be time for a pat on the back for LeBron’s contributions and perhaps a gentle nudge to let him know that his continued presence could hinder the team’s growth. The franchise can’t truly invest in Doncic while LeBron is still around, even if it’s just as a veteran figure.

The Lakers and LeBron shared eight memorable years—championships, increased global presence, and moments to remember.

But, the fundamental question remains in any relationship:

Are we together out of love, or out of fear of change?

And after all this time, the answer seems all too clear.
