Ralph Norman Launches Campaign for Governor of South Carolina
Rep. Ralph Norman, who was first elected to Congress in 2017, has kicked off his campaign for governor of South Carolina. He made the announcement during a rally in Rock Hill on Sunday.
“I’m running to shake things up, clean up Columbia, and ultimately defeat the corrupt political establishment,” Norman told the gathering of voters. He emphasized his independence from lobbyists and bureaucratic elites, stating that his loyalty lies with the people of South Carolina.
As a key part of his platform, Norman has vowed to create a “Government Efficiency Office” aimed at identifying waste, fraud, and abuse in the state’s government.
Campaign Objectives and Promises
Additionally, Norman has committed to improving South Carolina’s infrastructure, implementing term limits for state legislators, and enacting tort reform. He also has plans to change the way judges are selected, as most current judicial positions are determined by the General Assembly, with some appointments made by the governor.
In his speech, he mentioned the need for a “bully’s pulpit” to communicate directly with the public and referred to employing a “rejection pen” in regard to certain policies. His campaign also reflects socially conservative values, promoting school choice and gender-specific bathroom access in schools.
Norman didn’t shy away from pointing fingers, suggesting that if the situation deteriorates, Republican lawmakers who fail to represent the reforms that people desire should not remain in office.
He enters a competitive race that includes several other prominent figures, such as South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and Lt. Col. Pamela Evett, as well as state Sen. Josh Kimbrell. Meanwhile, fellow Rep. Nancy Mace is also rumored to be contemplating a run.
The Importance of Trump’s Support
With President Donald Trump having a substantial backing in South Carolina, Norman highlighted the importance of that support for both primary and general elections. He noted their shared backgrounds in real estate and emphasized the need for business-minded leaders who have taken risks in the market.
“We need people who built something, took risks, and yes, lost money,” he remarked. Norman also underscored his contributions toward increasing conservatism in budgeting and policies during his tenure.
Having served on several House committees, including Financial Services, Budget, and Rules, Norman has built a reputation for being steadfast in his beliefs. In his speech, he expressed pride in being seen as uncompromising in his pursuit of conservative reforms.
Interestingly, Norman has remained a supporter of Trump, even after initially backing former Governor Nikki Haley, who has since exited the race. Despite potential backlash from aligning with Haley, Norman has managed to keep his standing with Trump and continues to be active in GOP functions.
The South Carolina gubernatorial election is set for November 2026.
