Passenger Denied Boarding Over Oversized Luggage

An emotional scene unfolded at Sofia Airport in Bulgaria on July 24 when a woman was denied boarding due to her oversized bag. A video captured her distress as she attempted to check her holdall, which staff had determined did not meet their size requirements.

When informed she needed to pay extra for the larger luggage, she struggled to fit it into the designated space but ultimately failed. The video shows her growing increasingly desperate, pleading with border police as other passengers looked on from behind a glass partition.

Despite her insistence and knocking on the door, attempts to reason with the staff were fruitless. Witness Nikolay Stefanov, who recorded the incident, described how the situation escalated quickly, leading other passengers to worry about potential flight cancellations if they didn’t board the bus promptly.

Stefanov expressed shock at how the staff treated the woman, noting a lack of empathy during her struggle. The incident caught the attention of Bulgarian parliament members, prompting discussions about installing security cameras at the airport to monitor staff behavior in such chaotic situations.

In response to the outcry, Transport Minister Grozdankarajov stated that the main ground operators would face significant penalties following an investigation. Meanwhile, Gold Air Handling Bulgaria defended its staff, claiming they acted professionally and that the rules regarding luggage sizes and fees are dictated solely by Ryanair.

Interestingly, Ryanair’s CEO Michael O’Leary mentioned that employees who identify and handle oversized bags receive a financial incentive. He emphasized the airline’s ongoing effort to manage luggage policies, indicating that they often operate full flights with varied baggage allowances among passengers.
