Elmo Costume Confronts Protesters at ICE Facility in Portland
This past weekend, a person dressed in an Elmo costume mingled with demonstrators outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland, Oregon, leading to a somewhat chaotic situation.
The altercation was captured on video by Katie Daviskirt from Millennial Post. Filmed on Saturday, footage shows the individual in costume lying on the ground near the facility’s entrance, playfully engaging with the surrounding protesters. At one point, the Elmo character even dances in front of an anti-ICE demonstrator trying to respond to the antics.
According to reports from Storyful, the whole incident left many of the anti-ICE protesters feeling baffled and somewhat irritated.
Multiple Arrests Following Violent Confrontations
Earlier this month, tensions grew as Portland’s city council considered actions to remove ICE from its detention facilities, which have been hotspots for violent protests. During a crowded hearing, a city councillor indicated the possibility of revoking ICE’s permission to operate at the South Waterfront facility, citing violations of its conditional use permit from 2011.
Concerns Over Detention Policies
This permit allows for detention under certain conditions, yet there are growing concerns among residents and lawmakers that ICE may be improperly detaining individuals longer than a mandated 12-hour period. Complaints have arisen regarding the potential impact of these facilities on the community. Residents advocating for sanctuary city policies have testified about experiences with targeted arrests, gas attacks, and various threats.
Local resident Michel Dar voiced her concerns, stating, “Our sanctuary and human values are under siege.” She further emphasized that the aggressive actions of federal agents pose risks to everyone, not just immigrants.
Residents have also complained about disruptions caused by the protests, including loud bangs that disturb those living in subsidized housing and affect students in nearby schools. A few individuals even criticized the involvement of antifa in the demonstrations.
The tumultuous scene outside the facility has been ongoing since June, with one notable event where anti-ICE protesters clashed with law enforcement, prompting the use of rubber bullets, tear gas, and flashbangs to restore order.
