‘I Have to Accept It’: Bill Maher Acknowledges He Was Mistaken About Trump’s Tariffs

Bill Maher Reflects on Trump’s Tariffs

On a recent episode of his “Club Random” podcast, comedian Bill Maher acknowledged that his prior prediction about President Donald Trump’s tariffs and their potential to devastate the US economy by July was misguided.

Many economists had anticipated that Trump’s tariffs would lead to increased inflation and other adverse effects. However, several economic indicators reveal a different narrative. Maher noted that he was among those forecasting an economic downturn that, so far, hasn’t materialized, especially when looking at the stock market and his own observations.

“I remember thinking, like many, ‘Oh, by July 4th, something is going to happen.’ It seemed plausible at the time,” he said, acknowledging that his forecast didn’t play out as expected.

He continued, “To be honest, I’m not quite sure what his strategy is. But the stock market is hitting record highs. Sure, not everyone is invested in the market, but I see people going about their lives.” Maher expressed surprise that he thought the tariffs would hurt the economy by now, but, as he admitted, they hadn’t.

With the robust performance of the stock market, Maher also highlighted gains in production output. Following a revision, manufacturing output saw a 0.3% increase in May and a 0.1% rise in June. Furthermore, the number of unemployment claims in the US dropped by 4,000 for the week ending July 19, marking the sixth consecutive week of decline, according to reports.

US retail sales also exceeded forecasts, climbing by 0.6% in June, as noted in estimates from the US Census Bureau released on July 17.

Additionally, Trump has introduced significant trade agreements during his presidency, targeting partners such as the European Union, Japan, and the Philippines.
