Mercedes seeks clarity following challenging Belgian Grand Prix

Mercedes’ Rocky Start to the 2025 Formula 1 Season

Mercedes had a promising kickoff to the 2025 Formula 1 season, with George Russell stepping up as a leader after Lewis Hamilton’s exit. He secured a podium in four out of the first six races. Meanwhile, rookie Kimmi Antonelli, who filled in for Hamilton, achieved his first pole position in the sprint race at the Miami Grand Prix, scoring points in five of those weekends.

However, things have worsened in the last few weeks. The Canadian Grand Prix seemed like a peak moment for the team, but since then, it’s been downhill. Russell did win there, and Antonelli managed to grab his first podium, yet Russell’s finishes dipped to fifth place in Austria and Belgium, followed by a 10th at Silverstone. Antonelli hasn’t scored since Montreal, which he attributes to a “lack of confidence” during this tough stretch.

This past Sunday at Spa turned out to be another disappointing outing, with Russell finishing fifth and Antonelli in P16. Team principal Toto Wolff expressed frustration, stating, “There aren’t many positives from the Spa weekend. Our pace just isn’t competitive with our usual rivals.” He stressed the need for the team to quickly diagnose the underlying issues and improve during upcoming race weekends.

In light of recent struggles, Russell and Trackside engineering director Andrew Schoblin have arranged a major meeting at the factory on Monday, aiming to recalibrate before heading into the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Russell described this period as “pretty overwhelming.” He noted the weather hasn’t favored them and acknowledged their recent lack of pace. “We all need to come together,” he added, indicating their discussions will focus on the decisions made leading up to this slump.

He mentioned that since the last round of upgrades to the W16, the team’s performance felt like a regression. “We changed direction months ago, yet it seems we’ve taken a step back since then,” he reflected. It might take several races to pinpoint the cause of their pace decline, but it’s evident they might need to revisit earlier setups.

Shovlin suggested that recent changes to front wing regulations could be influencing their performance. Following the Spanish Grand Prix, new rules were introduced that limited the bending of front wings under aerodynamic loads. Mercedes performed well with their new wing at the Canadian Grand Prix, but Shovlin worries this could be a contributing factor to their recent struggles.

He remarked, “Initially, we had a car that handled well on nearly every circuit. We were competitive enough for the front rows.” While the new regulations haven’t improved stability, he acknowledged that the recent components could be impacting their performance. “There are certainly avenues we can explore,” Shovlin continued. “We’re investigating various design choices we’ve made in recent races.”

Mercedes engineers are hopeful they can make the necessary adjustments before the Hungarian Grand Prix, the last race before the summer break. Shovlin emphasized that while changes have been made, a thorough review with the drivers is crucial to ensure they’re focused on the right issues moving forward.

In the meantime, Antonelli’s dwindling confidence is a pressing concern for the team. Following a tough weekend, he looked visibly upset but attempted to stay optimistic. His visit from Lewis Hamilton following the Belgian Grand Prix offered some encouragement. “He advised me to keep my chin up, saying it’s normal to have off days,” Antonelli shared.

Hamilton praised Antonelli’s efforts, highlighting the challenges of stepping into such a high-pressure role at a young age. “It’s impressive what he’s handling,” Hamilton remarked, “especially considering he jumped into racing without even having a driver’s license initially.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong support system for Antonelli.

As Brandle pointed out, Mercedes must ensure Antonelli doesn’t spiral into a lack of confidence. The upcoming summer break could help, but the team needs to act quickly to prevent this issue from affecting him long-term. Hopefully, the gathering on Monday will set them on the right path.
