Rev. Al Sharpton Responds to Trump’s Accusations
Rev. Al Sharpton addressed President Donald Trump’s recent claims about him during an appearance on MSNBC. He firmly stated that he hasn’t received any payment to support former Vice President Kamala Harris, contradicting Trump’s assertions made on social media.
In an interview with “Morning Joe” host Jonathon Lemia, Sharpton declared, “Absolutely not.” He explained that the funding he received was designated for a voting campaign by the National Action Network, of which he is a part, not a direct payment for supporting Harris.
He noted an interesting twist regarding the National Action Network’s legal team, mentioning they could consider a defamation lawsuit because, according to their findings, there’s no evidence that any such payment took place.
Sharpton criticized Trump further, linking him to controversies surrounding Jeffrey Epstein, stating that the Trump administration attempted to distract from serious issues by creating external narratives.
He recalled Trump’s comments attempting to downplay his own problems, remarking that the president’s tactics seemed to revolve around race, suggesting that figures like Harris, Oprah Winfrey, and himself were being used as scapegoats.
While discussing the criticism directed at Trump, he indicated that the focus on race was a strategy by the former president, who, according to Sharpton, implied that he had been unfairly held accountable for various issues, including the investigations into his activities.
Sharpton made a strong point regarding claims of financial misconduct. He mentioned that after the presidential election, reports surfaced about large sums owed by the Democratic Party. He asserted that some of these payments, including significant amounts paid to celebrities like Beyoncé, raised eyebrows and needed further scrutiny by the Federal Election Commission.
The campaign had reportedly allocated two payments of $500,000 to Oprah Winfrey’s production company, a decision that drew attention because of Winfrey’s visible support for Harris during the campaign.
Sharpton, known for his vocal opposition to Trump and endorsement of Democratic ideals, engaged with Harris prior to the election, emphasizing the need for transparency regarding campaign funding. He pointed out that the donations to his nonprofit from the Harris campaign had not been disclosed to viewers during their discussions.
Reflecting on the importance of legacy, Sharpton expressed hope that future generations would remember Harris’s contributions, referencing Shirley Chisholm as a pivotal figure in history.
The White House has not yet commented on Sharpton’s statements regarding these matters.
