Trump Praises UK PM on Immigration Policies
Former President Donald Trump commended the Prime Minister of the UK for successfully managing illegal immigrant crossings in the English Channel, expressing his view that the actions taken are “wonderful.” This sentiment was shared during a recent gathering at the Trump Turnberry Golf Club in Scotland, where Trump briefly inquired about priorities regarding immigration.
He emphasized that immigration is a significant issue, stating, “If they’re from other countries and you don’t know who they are, are they coming from prison?” He noted that no individuals without proper legal measures were admitted last month.
Trump remarked, “You’re doing great things, not just good.” While he admitted he isn’t an expert on maritime issues, he expressed concern about boats potentially filled with individuals who were undesirable from their home countries. He believed that many nations are sending people they would rather not keep.
Context of the Meeting
This meeting comes shortly after the announcement of a trade agreement with the European Union. Recent statistics revealed that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported historically low numbers of illegal border encounters. There was a notable drop of 93% in encounters compared to last year. Under Trump’s administration, zero illegal individuals were released within the U.S., contrasting sharply with over 27,000 releases during Biden’s term the previous year.
Turner’s government, since taking power in mid-2024, has reportedly facilitated the removal of around 35,000 individuals from the UK who lacked the right to remain. The Prime Minister’s representative noted, “We are extremely pleased to return people who don’t have the right to be here,” a sentiment echoed by Trump, who expressed his deep affection for the UK, particularly since his mother was born there.
Trump conveyed his view that Europe has changed drastically in recent years due to mass immigration. He warned that if action isn’t taken to manage the situation, it could fundamentally alter the continent. “People can’t come here illegally,” he asserted, adding that such crossings can bring negative elements, including criminals.
Focus on Trade and Immigration Policies
At the press conference earlier this month, Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron laid the groundwork for a deal aimed at regulating immigration flows. This new “One In, One Out” system would allow the UK to repatriate individuals arriving on small boats from France, while simultaneously accepting a corresponding number of migrants classified as legal asylum seekers from France.
The UK government is under growing pressure to address the influx of migrants, which has surged by over 50% since the start of the year. Last week, new sanctions targeting illicit small boat crossings were unveiled. British officials asserted that these sanctions would help prevent criminal organizations from profiting from human smuggling.
In light of recent policy shifts under the Labour government, British officials are working to replace previous controversial measures that allowed deportation to Rwanda. A new security strategy aims to better identify smuggling routes and enhance border enforcement.
