Flint City Council Member Charged with Assault

A 44-year-old Flint, Michigan city council member, known for his involvement in a Democratic initiative to expunge criminal records, is facing serious charges after allegedly assaulting a woman.

Leon El Alamine was arrested on July 10 and now confronts both felony and misdemeanor charges related to domestic violence and assault, as indicated by the Mount Morris Township Police’s filing.

He was appointed to the Flint City Council in March, filling a seat left vacant after the departure of Councillor Eric Mays, and later won a special election against Carol MacIntosh in November 2024.

According to prosecutor David Leighton, the alleged victim claimed El Alamine became angry when she was checking her emails, punched her in the face, pulled her by her hair, and attempted to suffocate her. She was reportedly forced to lock herself in the bathroom to escape and called 911.

Leighton noted that the victim had visible injuries on her face and neck, which aligned with her account of the assault, and mentioned that police discovered a clump of hair at the scene.

Moreover, authorities found an unlicensed firearm inside his residence.

El Alamine, who has a past as a convicted cocaine dealer, was sentenced to at least 12 years in prison for drug and weapon offenses back in 2003. His online bio states that he fell into a coma after a drug-related shooting incident and subsequently converted to Islam, adopting the name Leon “El Aramin.” He later founded the Institute of “money, attitude, direction, education.”

In April 2021, his criminal record was cleared under Michigan’s Clean Slate Act aimed at providing a second chance for former offenders.

He remarked last year on LinkedIn, “Mass incarceration is one of the biggest threats to American democracy.”

After his arrest, El Alamine addressed the situation through a post on the Made Institute’s Facebook page.

In his statement, he declared that the allegations were false, expressing his confidence in the truth and legal processes. He assured that his legal team was working to clear his name.

His bond has been set at $7,500. During a recent court hearing, conditions for his release included prohibition from contacting alleged victims, consuming alcohol or recreational marijuana, and possessing any weapons.

Despite these serious charges, he has yet to resign from his city council position and continues to represent the First Ward.

As reported, it’s still uncertain whether Councillor El Alamine will maintain his role amid these felony charges.
