Florida Lawmaker Reflects on Tour of Controversial Immigration Facility
A Florida state senator has expressed concern following his recent visit to a facility known for detaining illegal immigrants in the state. The senator described a somber atmosphere, recalling how, in the past, detainees would chant for freedom as they attempted to leave. “We used to see people yearning for liberty,” Jones said. “But now, they say these individuals aren’t safe.”
Republican Leaders Push Back on Democrats’ Criticism of “Crocodile Alcatraz”
During a recent visit, Jones shared his observations about the newly opened immigration detention facility in the Everglades. The center was inaugurated on July 1, 2025, during a tour led by President Donald Trump and Secretary of Homeland Security Chris Noem.
“They set up the place to evoke a sense of dread—after all, it’s called Alcatraz,” he noted, sharing that the colored wristbands identified different types of offenses, with yellow representing a civil infraction. “I saw 32 men in a confined space who were given just a turkey sandwich, some chips, and an apple. That was the extent of their meal,” Jones remarked.
Democrats Raise Concerns Over Safety at the Detention Center
Jones described the conditions as troubling, stating, “We witnessed a man tied up, sitting on a bench, restrained at the wrists and ankles.” He emphasized that the intake process appeared to be quite disheartening, and they had requested a glimpse into the medical facilities within the center.
The detention center is situated on the grounds of a former airport, designed to accommodate up to 5,000 undocumented immigrants, fulfilling the president’s campaign promise to address illegal immigration in the country. However, Jones’s account highlights serious concerns about the treatment of those detained.
Attempts to obtain a statement from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s office have been made, but no response was available at the time of this report.
