Shooting in New York City results in 4 fatalities: Key information to understand

Four individuals lost their lives and another was seriously injured following a shooting incident at a Midtown Manhattan office building on Monday. Among the deceased was a New York City police officer.

According to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tish, officers began receiving reports of gunfire around 6:28 PM.

“Footage from security cameras shows the shooter entering the lobby, veering right, and immediately opening fire on NYPD personnel,” Tish informed the press. “He then targeted a woman who was hidden behind a pillar, firing at her, before continuing through the lobby.”

Here’s what you need to know about the shooting at 345 Park Avenue.

Who was the shooter?

Law enforcement identified the suspect as Shane Tamura, 27, who had just arrived in New York from Las Vegas hours before the shooting.

In his car, officers discovered a backpack containing a rifle case, a loaded revolver, ammunition, and a prescription medication, Tish noted.

Authorities mentioned that he had a “history of mental health issues.”

“We are still looking into his motivation and trying to understand why he chose this specific location,” the police commissioner revealed.

Where did the shooting take place?

The incident occurred in the lobby as well as the 33rd floor of the 345 Park Avenue building, which houses major firms like NFL Headquarters, KPMG, and Blackstone, as stated by Tish. This 44-story building is owned by Rudin Management, one of the largest privately owned real estate firms in the city.

After the initial shots in the lobby, Tamura proceeded to the 33rd floor, firing within the Rudin Management Suite before turning the gun on himself, according to authorities.

What was the shooter’s motivation?

Mayor Eric Adams mentioned in an interview that Tamura intended to visit the NFL office but inadvertently took the wrong elevator.

A note found on his body indicated that he believed he was suffering from CTE, a degenerative brain condition caused by repeated head injuries from playing football. The note reportedly urged the NFL to examine his brain, sources indicated.

What do we know about the officers who were killed?

Didalur Islam, 36, was the first officer to be shot during the incident. Authorities reported that he emigrated from Bangladesh and joined the NYPD in December 2021.

At the time of the shooting, he was not assigned to provide security for Rudin Management. Islam is survived by two children and a pregnant wife.

Who are the other victims?

Blackstone confirmed that one of the victims was an executive named Wesley Repatner, 43.

Details regarding the other two victims have not been disclosed.

What type of weapon was used?

Investigators revealed that Tamura used an M4 rifle during the shooting, which is typically associated with military use. After injuring several individuals, the gunman took his own life.
