Jets running back Zach Evans surprisingly steps away from football at 24

Jett has decided to take a brief break from training camp after a run-in with Zack Evans.

Details are scarce, but New York confirmed this afternoon that Evans has been placed on the reserve/retired list. He’s just 24 years old.

Evans was the Rams’ sixth pick in the 2023 draft, participating in 10 games mostly on special teams, where he had nine carries for 19 yards.

The 5-foot-11, 211-pound running back joined the Jets practice squad in December 2024, later signing a reserve/futures deal in January, keeping his spot on the 90-man roster through training camp.

While his NFL journey hasn’t quite gone as hoped, Evans initially stood out as a top recruit from North Shore High School in Texas.

Ranked as a five-star recruit by 247Sports, he was the second-best running back in a state known for its talent.

After high school, Evans went to TCU and played two seasons, amassing 1,063 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in 15 games.

He transferred to Ole Miss for his junior year, where he added 1,055 total yards and 10 touchdowns across 12 games.

In the 2023 NFL Draft, he was selected 215th overall.

During his time at Jets camp, Evans was part of a crowded running back group which included notable players like Blairon Allen, Isaiah Davis, and former Michigan standout Donovan Edwards, not to mention Kennenu Wang Goo, who had a notable 99-yard kick-return touchdown in one of his recent plays.

Following Evans’s retirement, the Jets moved quickly to announce the signing of Laurance Tophili, an undrafted free agent from Florida State.

As Evans is now on the reserve/retired list, the Jets maintain his rights until his contract officially expires.
