EPA leader Lee Zeldin to cancel 'holy grail' emissions decision from Obama era that increased energy expenses for years

EPA Head Plans to Revoke Obama-Era Emissions Regulations

WASHINGTON – Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, is set to scrap emissions regulations established during the Obama administration. He has previously referred to these rules as the “Holy Grail of Climate Change Religion.” These regulations are linked to $1 trillion in costs and have driven up energy prices for more than a decade.

During a speech at a car dealership in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Zeldin announced his intention to erase a significant finding from 2009, claiming it would “end 16 years of uncertainty for automakers and American consumers,” and dubbing it “the biggest deregulation in US history.”

“Feedback from various stakeholders indicates that the previous administrations distorted the law, ignored established precedents, and manipulated science, all while imposing hidden taxes on American families,” the former Long Island lawmaker stated.

Zeldin emphasized concerns regarding greenhouse gas emissions, stating that these findings were not independently validated and posed a genuine threat to American jobs and livelihoods.

By annulling these findings, the EPA suggests that American consumers could save up to $54 billion annually.

Under the Obama administration, the EPA concluded that gases like carbon dioxide and methane emitted from vehicles posed serious risks to public health. This finding, while not immediately restricting anything, allowed for the introduction of several regulations impacting the automotive sector.

Zeldin’s proposal would eliminate the discovery that enabled both former President Obama and President Biden’s EPA to impose regulations on emissions from vehicles with heavy-duty engines, as permitted under section 202(a) of the Clean Air Act.

Since 2010, regulations for lighter vehicles such as cars and SUVs have been gradually implemented, later extending to cover all vehicle models. Biden used these findings to promote the mass production of electric vehicles during his administration.

“These electric truck mandates risk pushing the trucking industry toward collapse, disrupting supply chains and increasing costs for families and businesses,” remarked Chris Spear, president of the American Trucking Association, who was present at the event.

Moreover, it has stifled innovation by disregarding existing technologies that could have further cut emissions at minimal costs.

Democrats in Congress criticized this decision, with Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ), a leading figure on the House Energy Commerce Committee, calling it a “sneaky betrayal of the American people.”

“The Trump administration and its EPA officials downplay the health risks of climate pollution not due to scientific evidence, but to cater to billionaire corporate interests,” Pallone argued.

This pivot occurs amidst Zeldin’s efforts to reduce bureaucracy related to energy matters.

Recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions have also supported Trump’s EPA in setting regulatory limits, including the emissions standards governing coal and gas power plants.

The White House Management and Budget Office is preparing to tackle the withdrawal of these regulations across various agencies.

“Since the Obama EPA’s 2009 discovery, the coal industry has been decimated, electricity prices have soared, and the average car price has nearly doubled,” Zeldin remarked. He questioned whether consumers would seek reparations for the harm caused by the federal government’s climate policies.
