North Carolina Lawmakers Override Governor’s Vetoes

The Democratic governor of North Carolina recently rejected 14 bills, but on Tuesday, lawmakers managed to overturn those vetoes, with some assistance from Democrats.

Among the bills, one specified gender as strictly male or female, while another mandated local law enforcement to collaborate with federal authorities on immigration matters, alongside expanding gun rights in private schools.

Some pointed remarks were made following the veto overrides. A Senate Republican leader expressed optimism about moving forward for the benefit of North Carolina families.

Of the 14 vetoes from Governor Josh Stein, Republicans successfully overturned eight on Tuesday morning, aided by a handful of Democratic votes. Although the Republicans hold a supermajority in the Senate, they were still short at the Capitol, where a three-fifths vote is needed to counteract vetoes in both chambers of Congress.

Notably, one Democratic vote was pivotal in allowing private schools to arm their employees or volunteers. Another Democratic senator contributed to nullifying the veto related to cooperation with U.S. immigration and customs enforcement.

Additionally, a different Democrat was instrumental in overriding Stein’s veto on a bill that prevented state funding from being utilized for transgender transition surgeries, permitting lawsuits regarding gender transition.

Republican Senator Phil Berger criticized Stein for being disconnected from the everyday concerns of North Carolinians.

In one of his public statements, he noted, “He tolerates illegal aliens committing crimes in our schools, and endorses government overreach regarding our Second Amendment rights.” The senator added that he anticipates more Republicans will join in to further foist their agenda and safeguard families in North Carolina.

In related news, Stein expressed his frustration on social media regarding the rejection of bills aimed at climate change goals, indicating that this approach could ultimately increase utility costs for residents.

He emphasized, “The General Assembly is jeopardizing clean energy job opportunities in our state,” pressing lawmakers to finalize the state budget.

Stein urged, “The most crucial bill for all North Carolinians is the budget. It’s time for the General Assembly to set aside differences and focus on investments in our state and its future.”

It’s clear that other bills may also face similar fates regarding their vetoes in the near future.
