Dem Senator Reed: Iran Situation Deteriorated Under Trump, 'He's Struggling'

Senator Comments on Iran Conflict

During the recent episode of “Fox News Sunday,” Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) discussed how President Donald Trump’s decisions have intensified the conflict with Iran.

Reed noted, “By abandoning the JCPOA, we’ve lost significant insight into Iran’s nuclear program. They now have access to more enriched nuclear material, which we estimate could be weaponized in about nine to twelve months if they choose to pursue that route. They’re not currently aiming for nuclear weapons, but we still need to manage their nuclear ambitions. We could have maintained stricter controls, but Trump removed them. The situation has become increasingly complex, especially after unilateral military actions in conjunction with Israel. Now, the focus is on finding a way out.”

Host Shannon Bream raised a question, “In the long term, would reopening the Strait help in preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and also lower oil prices? Would that reflect positively on this president’s administration?”

Reed responded, “I genuinely hope we can arrive at a favorable agreement because it benefits both the U.S. and global interests. However, to strike a deal now, negotiations will require concessions from both sides. It’s uncertain what the president is willing to offer and what the Iranians might accept. Interestingly, Iran is currently in a more precarious position than it was a few months ago. Factors include a more aggressive U.S. stance and evidence that they can disrupt oil flow from the Strait of Hormuz. They find themselves in a troubling scenario regarding their nuclear facilities. Still, restoring the JCPOA would be a significant achievement for the president.”
