Adam Butler, a veteran player for the Raiders, had some reflective thoughts about Christian Wilkins following his recent release.
While chatting with reporters on Tuesday, Butler, who played as a defensive tackle alongside Wilkins last season, unexpectedly veered into a discussion about mental health when asked about his former teammate. He noted, “We’re a bit removed from the situation. I don’t want to delve too deeply into it. But I think, no matter who you are—whether you’re an athlete or not—everyone has their struggles. If something’s off in your life, it’s crucial to reach out to someone, whatever that looks like for you.”
He continued, emphasizing the significance of support, “There are billions of people in this world willing to listen and help you navigate through what you’re going through. Don’t rush into decisions. It’s important to seek help.”
Wilkins’ release came after just one year into a surprising series of roster changes, following a five-year, $110 million contract he signed in 2024.
Reports indicate that the team and Wilkins had disagreements regarding his rehabilitation from a foot injury that sidelined him for all but five games last season. Additionally, they were at odds over whether to proceed with surgery on the injury, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
On Thursday, the NFL Players Association filed a complaint on behalf of Wilkins.
However, on Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that other factors contributed to the team’s decision to part ways with Wilkins. Allegedly, he was involved in a light-hearted incident where he attempted to kiss another player, which did not sit well with that teammate.
The Raiders stated following Wilkins’ release, “The franchise is committed to excellence both on and off the field. Without a clear plan or path for Christian’s return to play, this decision was essential for the organization to move forward and get ready for the upcoming season.”
