Poll Shows Zoran Mamdani’s Strong Lead in NYC Mayoral Race
Recent polling paints a bleak picture for competitors in the New York City mayoral race, as frontrunner Zoran Mamdani holds a significant lead. According to the latest survey from Zenith Research/Public Progress Solutions, the Queens Congressman and Democratic candidate is projected to secure 50% of the votes in the upcoming general election.
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, still attempting a political comeback after his defeat to the 33-year-old Mamdani in June, is trailing behind with just 22%. Meanwhile, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa is at 13%.
Mayor Eric Adams, who has faced criticism following various controversies, garnered a meager 7% support in the poll.
The surveys indicate that even if Adams and Cuomo entered a head-to-head match against the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) lawmakers, neither candidate would be able to unseat Mamdani, who remains firmly in the lead.
Cuomo does manage a closer result in hypothetical scenarios where other candidates are eliminated, yet Mamdani still overwhelms with 55% to Cuomo’s 40%.
In a matchup focusing solely on Adams, the poll suggested that he might receive between 32% and 59% of the votes.
Even if Adams were to withdraw and back Cuomo, Mamdani is projected to win, maintaining a solid lead at 51%, with Cuomo only reaching 25% in that scenario, while Sliwa would net 15%.
Challenges for both Adams and Cuomo stem from their negative public perceptions; 60% of voters indicated they would never consider Cuomo as a candidate, and a troubling 68% said the same for Adams.
Overall, if either candidate were to drop out, the polls suggest they would still not approach Mamdani’s substantial support.
