Trump Talks Xi and Trade in Scotland
In an exclusive conversation with Breitbart News, US President Donald Trump shared that he’s been hearing from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is eager for a meeting. Trump emphasized the growing strain in US-China relations but noted that Xi seems to be feeling the pressure, particularly regarding trade. It appears, based on Trump’s comments, that he believes he currently holds the upper hand in negotiations.
During a nearly hour-long interview at his Turnberry golf resort in Scotland, Trump reflected on his travels, which he described as some of the most extraordinary experiences of his early presidency. He mentioned his visits to Saudi Arabia and China, recalling the Great Wall as “unparalleled.” When discussing a potential trip to China, he hinted that a visit might happen soon, perhaps even before the year’s end.
This portion of Trump’s interview touched on a range of topics, including trade negotiations. He expressed pride in his trade agreements with the European Union and highlighted his success in negotiating a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. These developments coincided with his time in Scotland, where he also had the opportunity to engage in discussions with Britain’s Prime Minister Kiel Starmer.
Before departing for the US, Trump used social media to clarify misleading reports about a proposed summit with Xi. He stated, “I’m not asking for anything! It’s just an invitation from President Xi.” This suggests that it might be Xi who is more anxious for a meeting, rather than vice versa.
Earlier this week, Trump dispatched Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent to Sweden for trade talks with Chinese officials. As the interview began, Trump appeared to give last-minute directions regarding those consultations. He expressed a desire for China to open its market to US products, aiming for fairness in trade relations.
Trump remarked, “We want them to open. Trade transactions have been good.” This reflects an ongoing productive dialogue, especially with regard to tariffs, which have seen significant increases recently.
Upon his return to the US, Bescent is set to participate in a major interview with Breitbart News, contributing further insights into these trade negotiations. The spotlight will be on the initiatives Trump is orchestrating with various nations, including deals recently struck with Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and others.
Trump expressed optimism about negotiations with Thailand and Cambodia, stating that a deal is likely. Additionally, he is working towards forming a new US-led trade alliance that encompasses a substantial portion of the global economy. This coalition could represent almost 60% of the world’s GDP and around 2 billion people, positioning the US favorably on the global stage.
He declared, “This is the biggest thing that’s ever happened,” highlighting not just trade deals but also the overarching shift in international relations. As the next tariff deadline approaches, Trump seems resolute in pursuing his current strategies.
Trump also pointed out that his critics regarding tariff policies have begun to reassess their positions. Speaking on historical perspectives, he remarked that tariffs used to be a primary source of government funding before income taxes took precedence. He asserted that Breitbart News excels at covering trade issues, noted that many, including economists, have misunderstood the dynamics of tariffs.
More interviews following Trump’s latest discussion with Breitbart News are anticipated soon.
