Gaza Child Had 'Existing Health Issues'

On Tuesday, the New York Times reported that a Palestinian child previously featured on its front page admitted to having “previous health issues,” which had been misrepresented as caused by starvation.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with Hamas and other armed groups continuing their activities. Additionally, Hamas has yet to release Israeli hostages or bring about an end to the conflict.

According to reports from Breitbart News, the child, captured in a photograph by Ahmed Jihad Ibrahim Al-Arini of the Anadolu Agency, was found to be suffering from muscle damage. This detail was later disclosed by the outlet that published those images.

Some observers pointed out that in other images, family members of the boy, including siblings, appeared to be in good health.

A report from HonestReporting highlighted discrepancies in the photos, noting one in which another child, believed to be Muhammad’s brother, looked well-nourished and healthy, raising significant concerns about the narrative.

Furthermore, in a CNN report aired Saturday, the boy’s mother explained that Muhammad has muscle disorders, which necessitate ongoing physical therapy and specialized nutrition.

All media outlets that circulated this misleading narrative ought to revise their stories to reflect the complete truth. Muhammad’s condition is not solely due to starvation; instead, the images were presented in a way that lacked context and clarity.

The New York Times later acknowledged this information in a memo from its Public Relations department.

The images circulated by the media over the weekend portrayed weak Palestinian children to underscore the story of starvation in Gaza.

Some of these images depicted children with other medical conditions, including one who had cystic fibrosis and received treatment in Italy with the help of Israel.
