Tsunami Alert Issued for Hawaii, Alaska, and the U.S. West Coast Following Huge Earthquake Near Russian Coast

Tsunami Alerts Following Major Earthquake in Russia

Tsunami warnings were issued on Tuesday for Alaska, Hawaii, and the US West Coast after a powerful earthquake struck off the Russian coast. The quake, reported to be 8.8 in magnitude, occurred approximately 85 miles from the eastern edge of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, at a depth of nearly 12 miles, according to multiple sources.

The US Geological Survey initially reported the earthquake as 8.0, later revising it to 8.7 and finally to 8.8 by Tuesday evening. Following the seismic event, the National Weather Service issued alerts for various locations, including Guam, the Aleutian Islands, and Hawaii.

Reports indicate that Hawaii might see its first tsunami waves arriving around 7:10 PM local time. Sirens on the islands are scheduled to sound at 4:10 PM, 5:10 PM, and 6:10 PM to warn residents. Local officials have urged people to evacuate if a tsunami indeed occurs.

Additionally, Hawaii’s emergency management agency has advised residents to stay at least 100 feet away from rivers and marinas connected to the ocean. They also recommended moving boats to deep water if possible and mentioned that buildings taller than ten stories offer more protection in such events.

In California, the National Weather Service has predicted a possible tsunami arrival at around 12:15 AM local time on Wednesday. Beyond the US, Japan is preparing for potential impacts as well, with warnings of 1-meter waves expected along its northern coast around 10 AM local time. More waves may follow later in the day along parts of East Honshu and southern Nanjing.
