Anthony Volpe’s ups and downs during the Yankees’ thrilling victory over the Rays

Anthony Volpe's ups and downs during the Yankees' thrilling victory over the Rays

The Yankees are aiming to manage for just 10 days without their star player, Aaron Judge, which means they must explore new methods to score runs.

On Tuesday, they leaned heavily on their athleticism to create offensive opportunities, capitalizing on some mistakes made by the Rays.

With a mix of aggressive base running and exploiting the Rays’ errors, the Yankees managed to stage three scoring rallies, overcoming a costly mistake of their own to secure a 7-5 win during an extremely hot night in the Bronx.

Anthony Volpe played a pivotal role, going 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs batted in, and a stolen base, all contributing significantly during a critical four-inning stretch. Though he did stumble defensively, committing another throwing error in the ninth, Devin Williams helped cover for him by striking out Jonathan Aranda.

The Yankees, now sitting at 58-49, had recently faced a setback, getting swept in a doubleheader against the Orioles. This win, however, moved them within four games of first place and boosted their spirits in the division standings.

Cody Bellinger made a notable impact with a three-run homer that tied the game in the third inning, just as the Yankees began to find their rhythm.

Jasson Domínguez sparked the offense with a single, swiped second base, and then advanced to third on a flyball to left field.

He scored following Volpe’s bloop single, giving New York a 4-3 edge. After Austin Wells’ low liner got him on base, Jose Caballero struggled to field the ball cleanly, leading to a dual steal attempt that brought both he and Volpe into scoring position. The throw from Rays catcher Nick Fortes sailed wide, allowing Volpe to cross home plate.

Later in the game, Paul Goldschmidt had an RBI single that extended the lead to 6-3. Amid challenges with their fatigued bullpen, Max Fried stepped up for the Yankees, allowing four runs while pitching 6⅔ innings, which was vital for their endurance.

Although Fried started shaky with a home run to Aranda in the third, he quickly settled into the game, retiring 14 batters in a row until the seventh inning when the Rays closed the gap to 6-4.

Jonathan Loaisiga played a crucial role in relief, aided by a double play initiated by Volpe in the eighth inning. After a rocky start, he managed to hold the Rays scoreless over 1⅓ innings.

Volpe also added some insurance with his 15th home run of the season in the eighth, sending a ball 452 feet to right field and bringing the score to 7-4. This proved critical, especially as the Rays pressed in the ninth, forcing Williams to extend the inning.

The night began with a familiar problem, as Volpe contributed to the Yankees’ early struggles, missing a throw that helped the Rays take an early lead.

Fried encountered difficulties, falling behind in counts, which led to two early runs from Johnny DeLuca, who capitalized on a pitch into the gap.

After Aranda hit a home run on the first pitch Frank Fried offered in the third, the Rays took an early 3-0 lead, but Bellinger’s subsequent three-run shot leveled the playing field.
