Yankees suffer one-hit defeat to Orioles following Max Fried's injury

BALTIMORE — The Yankees wrapped up a tough road trip on a rather dismal note Wednesday afternoon, suffering a painful 7-0 defeat against the Orioles at Camden Yards.

In this game, the Yankees managed only one hit after their pitcher, Max Fried, departed early due to soreness in his left elbow. The team noted that he’d need imaging tests on Thursday, which has certainly raised some concerns.

While the Yankees (27-17) struggled offensively against the right-handed pitcher Kyle Bradish and the Orioles’ bullpen, the Orioles improved to a 20-24 record, with Fried ending up with a 1-5 record this season.

The most pressing concern is Fried’s health. He allowed three runs over three innings, and the relief pitchers Paul Blackburn and Ryan Yarbrough didn’t fare much better. Unfortunately, the Yankees’ offense faltered yet again, scoring just 14 runs across six games in this trip, including two shutouts, with six runs in a win the previous night.

The Yankees couldn’t muster a hit against Bradish until Jazz Chisholm Jr. belted a one-out double in the fifth inning. After Trent Grisham walked, it felt like a moment to capitalize, but they quickly retired the next 12 batters without a hit.

Spencer Jones subsequently walked, creating a promising situation with runners on the corners, but Anthony Volpe, making his season debut, struck out on a curveball to end the chance. Volpe, stepping in for the injured Jose Caballero, had a challenging game, finishing 0-for-3 and even committing a fielding error in the eighth inning.

The Orioles struck first, scoring a run in the second inning thanks to Fried’s RBI double off Coby Mayo, and they inflated the lead with two more in the third. Fried, usually reliable in the field, stumbled with a throwing error on a bunt hit, allowing runs to accumulate after a sacrifice fly and an RBI from Pete Alonso, pushing the score to 3-0.

By the fifth, Blackburn hit a two-run home run against Adley Rutschman, after which the ball ricocheted off Jones’ glove and bounced into the right-center wall. Yarbrough then entered in the sixth, and even after striking out a batter, he gave up three straight singles, extending the Orioles’ lead to 7-0.
