A follow-up to the cherished 90s romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz, 'My Best Friend’s Wedding,' has been revealed.

My Best Friend’s Wedding Sequel in the Works

It seems that an Oscar-nominated director has been tapped to craft a follow-up to the beloved 90s rom-com “My Best Friend’s Wedding.”

The original, featuring Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz, was a box office hit when it debuted in 1997. It’s still widely regarded as one of the genre’s most memorable films.

In the story, Roberts and Dermot Mulroney play Julian and Michael, two best friends with a pact: if they remained single by 28, they’d marry each other. However, when Michael gets engaged to another woman, portrayed by Diaz, Julian makes a bold move to stop the wedding just four days later. Talk about dramatic!

Now, Sony has brought on the acclaimed director, Cerin Song, known for their recent success with a project starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, to pen the sequel’s screenplay.

This news comes shortly after Mulroney hinted in an interview that there might be, well, a sequel story potentially in the works. He seemed a bit unsure though, mentioning something about a lawyer discussing it without providing any concrete details.

The original film garnered impressive accolades, earning $127 million in the U.S. and securing three Golden Globe nominations in the Best Musical or Comedy category, alongside acting nods for Roberts and Rupert Everett.

In another instance of nostalgia, director Gurinder Chadha has indicated that she’s also working on a sequel to her successful 2002 film featuring Keira Knightley. This new project is slated for release in 2027, coinciding with the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Chadha mentioned that she’s received nearly double the follow-up requests since the first film, which she feels is a testament to how it impacted women’s representation in sports.

Chadra expressed her excitement about revisiting these characters but hasn’t clarified whether the sequel will be a film or a TV series. She did, however, mention hopes of reuniting some familiar faces from the original cast.
