Support for Israel's military in Gaza declines

Americans’ Disapproval of Israel’s Military Actions Reaches 60%

Discontent among Americans regarding Israel’s military actions has surged to 60%, showing a significant divide along party lines. Support among Democrats has plummeted to just 8%, with only 25% of independents voicing approval—a notable factor in the overall decline of recognition.

The recent opinion poll, conducted from July 7 to 21, captures the growing international outrage. Experts highlight a severe “worst scenario” concerning the hunger crisis in Gaza, which continues to worsen due to the humanitarian situation.

Initially, Americans demonstrated support for Israeli actions in Gaza shortly after the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. However, disapproval has since eclipsed approval in each survey. In March 2024, disapproval peaked at 55% and remained significant through subsequent readings later that year.

While 71% of Republicans still back Israel’s military actions, the widening gap between political parties is jeopardizing the traditional bipartisan support for US-Israel relations.

Senator Angus King (I-Maine), part of the Senate Intelligence Committee, announced he would oppose military support for Israel amid the ongoing Gaza hunger crisis. Concurrently, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) presented a disapproval resolution aiming to block the shipment of certain weapons to Israel, reportedly targeting thousands of automatic assault rifles.

In April 2024, Congress allocated over $14 billion in security support to Israel, with the Biden administration overseeing numerous military sales, as reported by various sources.

Criticism has been directed at President Biden for the slow pace of weapon deliveries as Democrats push for the transfer of some of America’s most powerful arms. This follows the Trump administration’s earlier promise regarding military aid to Israel.

Earlier this month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu raised concerns about dwindling support for Israel among Democrats. He expressed his commitment to preserving the previously strong backing for Israel and condemned the spread of negativity against the nation on social media.

Gallup polls indicate that the disapproval rating for Netanyahu among Americans has reached its highest level since 1997.
